What Does Traction Control Do?

Ford is teaming up with Amazon to bring its Key by Amazon In-Car delivery service to eligible Ford and Lincoln vehicles. For more than a century, Ford has powered people’s ability to get where they need to go with safe, reliable cars. Now, we think it’s time to flip the script. Instead of using our vehicles solely to get us to our destinations, what if we used them as beacons to bring convenient and secure services to us? Thanks to advancements in wireless technology, we now are easily connected to the goods and services we want. With the internet, we’ve been able to save time by shopping online instead of leaving the house for everything from food and clothing, to electronics and more. And the results have been undeniable. Last year alone, the United States Postal Service delivered close to 6.2 billion packages — double the amount it delivered almost a decade ago. Some of these packages fit snugly into our mailboxes or can be accepted by building staff, but a lot of them end up sitting outside on porches and front stoops — vulnerable to bad weather or going missing. So, it’s easy to get anxious about your deliveries when you aren’t home to receive them. That’s why we’re teaming up with Amazon to bring its Key by Amazon In-Car delivery service to eligible Ford and Lincoln vehicles. Through In-Car delivery, eligible Ford and Lincoln owners now can have their Amazon Prime packages delivered to their vehicles. It’s a convenient, secure way to ensure your packages are delivered directly to you when you are out for the day, anticipating bad weather or wondering if your package is safe. Key by Amazon in-car delivery is available for select Ford 2017 and later model year vehicles equipped with FordPass Connect, and for Lincoln 2018 and later model year vehicles equipped with Lincoln Connect. In-Car delivery will be available virtually anywhere that Amazon offers the service, which is currently in several U.S. cities and surrounding areas. To use the in-car service you need to download the FordPass or Lincoln Way app, create an account, and activate your car for in-car delivery. Amazon Key app enables in-car deliveries by linking your Amazon Prime account with your FordPass or Lincoln Way account. You’ll receive notifications throughout the delivery process, including a head’s up right before delivery takes place and a confirmation that delivery is complete and your car has been securely locked. And for added peace of mind, the delivery driver verifies that your vehicle has been successfully relocked before proceeding with the next delivery. Plus, you are always in control, so if you change your mind the day of delivery, you can block access to your car; delivery will be made to the building where your car is parked or you can reschedule the delivery to the following day. And while this service alone is pretty exciting, Key In-Car delivery is just the first wave of what’s possible. Through our Ford connected vehicle services, other businesses are able to integrate their apps with Ford and Lincoln connected vehicles. This will allow us to deliver additional new services to our customers’ vehicles that improve their daily lives. For example, in addition to Key by Amazon, we’re also working with several different on-demand car wash services through FordPass and Lincoln Way, to give people the option to purchase eco-friendly car washes from Spiffy, RUB A DUB and Sparkl wherever these services are available. Ford is also working with several on-demand car wash services like Spiffy. Just think — instead of driving to a car wash and waiting in line, these companies can come straight to your car with a number of different services, including water-saving car washes and detailing service. And with the new functionality, they can unlock and lock your vehicle to clean the interior too, even removing pet hair that’s dug its way into your seats and floors. Spiffy is finalizing the launch of their Ford and Lincoln connected vehicle services for on-demand car washing in Atlanta, Charlotte, Dallas, Los Angeles, and Raleigh. Sparkl recently launched their on-demand car washing experience in the Chicago metro area, and Rub A Dub will launch later this year. Deliveries. Car washes. SUPERCOMPUTERS AND 3D PRINTING ARE SECRETS TO ALL-NEW MUSTANG SHELBY GT500 HIGH PERFORMANCE

When the 2020 Shelby GT500 goes on sale later this year, it will be the quickest- accelerating, most aerodynamically advanced street-legal Mustang ever, thanks to virtual testing in supercomputers and 3D printing. DEARBORN, Mich., March 13, 2019 – When the 2020 Shelby GT500 goes on sale later this year, it will be the quickest-accelerating, most aerodynamically advanced street-legal Mustang ever, thanks to virtual testing in supercomputers and 3D printing. Borrowing best practices from more than a century of racing, Ford Performance designers, powertrain and aerodynamics engineers functioned as a virtual racing team to test hundreds of designs both digitally and physically. They used state-of-the-art digital and additive manufacturing prototyping tools as part of a mission to make the ultimate, most advanced performance street-legal Mustang of all time. “We created and studied designs among the engineering teams and proved out different strategies long before we built our first prototype cars,” said Matt Titus, Ford Performance vehicle engineer. “Not only did this improve the effectiveness of the designs, it dramatically reduced the time it took to develop the GT500 – and the costs associated with that.” Every millimeter counts for the Mustang Shelby GT500 to deliver on downforce, braking and cooling targets. The team leveraged Ford’s vast resources of advanced design simulation tools, including the Ford Performance technical center in Concord, North Carolina, and rapid 3D prototyping systems at its Advanced Manufacturing Center in Redford, Michigan. To physically validate the improving designs, Ford’s wind tunnels in Michigan and Windshear rolling wind tunnel in Concord were also used. Real-world testing still matters, so the Shelby GT500 team ran extended high-speed tests on some of the most notable racetracks across the United States – including Virginia International Raceway, NOLA Motorsports Park and GingerMan Raceway – to refine the aerodynamic designs and help the all-new Shelby GT500 deliver the fastest track times ever in a production Mustang along with improved driver control for greater confidence behind the wheel. Delivering more than 700 horsepower using 93-octane fuel, maximizing cooling at the front is critical to the Shelby GT500’s vigorous track performance, and where the team focused much of its efforts. At wide-open throttle, the cooling system needs to extract up to 230 kilowatts of heat energy, enough to heat a dozen homes. The massive front brakes reject another 100 kilowatts of heat at maximum braking, so the team utilized advanced 3D airflow modeling to maximize overall cooling while working to minimize impact on front-end lift and drag. More than 500 3D cooling and aerodynamic designs were analyzed to maximize aero performance and cooling, with more advanced design models driven on full chassis simulators at the Ford technical center with professional racing drivers. Key modeling simulations included cooling systems, front fascia and splitter designs, along with brake ducting, rear spoiler designs and a large 6.03 square-foot louvered hood vent. Speeding development time, the most promising designs were printed in a matter of days, not months, allowing the team to increase the fidelity of performance and aerodynamic refinement. For example, more than 10 front splitter wickers were printed and tested, some with minute modifications to perfect their design, with multiple versions of parts simultaneously sent out for track evaluation. The team achieved maximum rear downforce of 550 pounds at 180 mph, leveraging the Mustang GT4 race-proven rear track wing to deliver the most downforce ever on a street-legal Mustang with available Carbon Fiber Track Package. An innovative new rear spoiler design, standard on the base 2020 Shelby GT500 and known by the aero team as “the swing” – a hybrid between a spoiler and a wing – is a result of the advanced simulations and prototyping process. With available Handling Package and Gurney flap installed, the swing works to deliver 379 pounds of rear downforce at 180 mph. Keeping cool and precise on the track High-performance cooling targets also factor into the design and virtual testing to help ensure consistent heat management and power delivery over extended sessions at the track. This includes a new performance fascia design that doubles the front opening volume and increases cooling pack airflow through six heat exchangers at top speed by 50 percent versus the existing Mustang GT350 design. A removable rain tray further aids cooling and works to reduce underhood air pressure at high speeds, while a Shelby-specific rear diffuser helps channel under-car airflow. A new dual-side thermostat routes coolant to a new auxiliary radiator, and a 600-watt brushless electric fan motor and performance aero fan shroud with 16 speed flaps improves cooling pack airflow while mitigating drag and front-end lift. Two new race-style oil and transmission coolers further improve powertrain cooling. “This all-new aero design merges state-of-the-art design and materials technology with the craftsmanship of Ford racing expertise to create the most aero-capable Mustang ever,” said Steve Thompson, Ford Performance vehicle dynamics engineer. “It’s powerful, balanced and consistent – even over extended track runs – which works to deliver more fun and greater confidence for drivers.” The 2020 Mustang Shelby GT500 goes on sale this fall. # # # GT350, GT500 and Shelby are registered trademarks of Carroll Hall Shelby Trust. Ford Performance Lineup Squares Off in One-Lap Showdown

What happens when you pit the entire Ford Performance lineup against each other in a one lap race around a professional course? It’s a question that would likely prompt some spirited discussions among enthusiasts. That was, until we settled it in this brand-new video. Filmed at the Motorland race circuit in Aragón, Spain, this epic showdown features the Ford F-150 Raptor, Fiesta ST, Focus RS, Mustang GT, Mustang GT350R, Ford GT road car and Ford GT race car in a full-throttle battle for bragging rights. The Ford Chip Ganassi Racing Team drivers took a breather from preparing for the upcoming season to show us how these Ford models perform on the track. “It was a hilarious shoot,” said Harry Tincknell. “Eight racing drivers all given a car to go flat-out in for a race.” To even the odds, the drivers set off at intervals, beginning with the Raptor and ending with the Ford GT race car. Navigating through the sharp turns and fast straightaways, each driver came to appreciate their respective cars’ unique characteristics. And if you think these guys were there for a test-drive, think again. “Driving the Mustang GT road car on the racetrack was great fun,” said Stefan Mücke. “It was very special to see all the Ford Performance cars on the track at the same time, and quite brave too, to do this with a group of competitive racing drivers! It got very close in the final corners as everybody wanted to be first. Great fun and an awesome lap!” It took nearly four hours and some sophisticated, high-tech camera equipment to capture the action. But thanks to three separate camera crews, 16 GoPro cameras, a drone and an innovative, custom-built Ford Fiesta ST tracking vehicle, you can catch every pulse-pounding second of the race in 4K ultra-high definition. Ford Is Using Virtual Reality to Design Cars

VR could accelerate development, plus you get to wear sweet goggles. There’s still a sense of wonderment accompanying a car designer using pen and paper to create a sketch out of thin air, and we hope that will always be part of the design process. But virtual reality is emerging as a helpful tool that can speed up development by skipping the 2D stage and starting straight with a 3D model, and as it happens, Ford’s designers are experimenting with virtual reality across five different design studios. Both exterior and interior designers are creating cars in a virtual reality room visible via a special headset. Using a controller, designers gesture in the air to sketch a design, and the result is a virtual car they can rotate and view from any angle. They can place a virtual driver inside the vehicle, and even step inside the vehicle themselves to feel what it’s like inside the cabin. Ford says the Gravity Sketch tool—it’s named for the company that created it—can decrease design time from weeks to hours. Typically, cars begin as a 2D sketch, become a high-quality illustration, and then transform into an advanced 3D model with computer software. Under this process, only then is the car evaluated in a VR environment. Ford Design Manager Michael Smith said Gravity Sketch will enable more human-centric car designs. “Jumping right into 3D gives us a 360-degree view of a vehicle as it is being created,” he said in a statement. Virtual reality is entering the automotive space in a variety of ways. At CES, Audi demonstrated tech that makes the drive experience part of a virtual reality game for vehicle passengers. When the car accelerates, brakes, or turns, the same happens in a game that features a spaceship flying through an asteroid field. Meanwhile, automakers are also experimenting with augmented reality. Nissan is using the tech to help drivers see around corners and behind buildings, for instance. A few years ago, we learned Ford was using hologram technology to create cars. With the help of wireless headsets, designers can place a hologram on top of a clay model or an actual car to see how different design changes would look.
