Peace of Mind for Our Customers

At this time when the news is dominated by Coronavirus (COVID-19), we wanted to personally reach out and let you know that we are vigilantly implementing enhanced protocols to ensure your safety when visiting our businesses. Every day, we closely monitor and analyze developments and statements from local, national and international health agencies, and we are taking actions to comply with their directives which are based on facts and medical science. There is nothing more important to us than making sure we manage this situation as effectively as possible, so you continue to feel confident visiting our business. Our senior management team meets daily and will continue to make decisions on how we can further improve our programs and actions to help protect guests and employees. The health authorities tell us that, to prevent the spread of Coronavirus, we must: wash hands frequently, heighten cleaning practices, avoid contact with sick people and stay away from work when ill. All our actions are focused in these areas. Here’s where we are at this time: We have implemented several new policies and procedures across our dealership, which will follow recommendations from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention ( CDC), the World Health Organization ( WHO), and the Alabama Department of Health ( ADPH). We are in constant communication with our employees to reinforce our sanitization safety procedures. In addition, we are sanitizing high-traffic public areas at an increased frequency. We have provided additional literature and are providing additional hand sanitizer dispensers to employees. For guests, we are providing more hand sanitizer dispensers across our businesses in high visibility and high traffic areas. We are also increasing our reserves of hand sanitizers for use by our guests and employees over an extended period. We have bought more cleaning and disinfectant supplies to utilize throughout this health concern. We are increasing the frequency of cleaning high-touch surfaces in public areas. We are reinforcing training procedures to ensure cleaning processes are implemented properly by our employees. While we have had no employees infected by the Coronavirus at this time, we have instituted a policy that if an employee appears to be suffering from flu-like symptoms, they will be asked to promptly seek medical attention and to remain at home until they are free of symptoms. Their area will then be quarantined until properly cleaned so that we can ensure the safety of all of our guests and staff. We are encouraging guests who are ill to seek medical attention and to avoid public exposure as much as possible. Please avoid our businesses if you are experiencing flu-like symptoms and call to cancel any existing appointments. We will be happy to reschedule for a future date. Additional measures we have implemented to assist our Service, Parts, and Rental customers: Out of an abundance of caution, our Ford Service, Parts, and Rental customers will find that we as a dealership have instituted a disinfection process that enhances our standard pickup and delivery service for all vehicles involved. These additional steps will create a singular and safer experience for both our clients and our dealership employees. These new steps are intended to build trust that we as a dealership are doing everything possible to provide the best service in all situations. At high level, we have implemented the following disinfecting process which include: Using recommended disinfecting wipes to clean high-touch driver areas of both the loaner and client vehicles. Our staff will be wearing new/fresh form fitting nitrile or latex gloves when driving and delivering vehicles. We have asked staff to avoid shaking hands and other physical contact during pickup and delivery with a client. We will deliver loaner and client vehicle key fobs in an envelope after disinfecting the key fob with a disinfectant wipe. We will be placing a leave behind note on the passenger seat in both the loaner and the client’s vehicle upon re-delivery stating what actions we have taken to ensure both our client’s and our staff’s safety. Our Service customers will have curbside service and a guaranteed loaner vehicle that has been sanitized available to them simply by calling us at (256) 891-3000 and setting an appointment time for drop-off. If curbside service isn’t an option, then call us and we may arrange to pick up your vehicle from your home or workplace so that we may perform service on your vehicle. If we do so, we will provide you with a sanitized loaner vehicle to utilize while service is being performed at our dealership. Whether a customer has been a client of our Service department previously or not, we will work with you to ensure that you can have the services you require completed. We will work with anyone driving any vehicle so long as it is not considered a “luxury brand” vehicle (i.e. BMW, Mercedes, etc.). For those vehicles we recommend that you contact an OEM dealership. We are continuously reevaluating the public health situation and will be adapting these processes as advised by public health authorities. Additional measures we have implemented to ensure the safety of our Sales customers: We offer at home test drives. These can be taken advantage of in one of two ways; 1) a client can request that we deliver a sanitized vehicle of their choosing to their home or place of work so that they may test drive the vehicle firsthand while limiting their exposure to others or 2) our Sales staff has been trained on methods of offering virtual test drives to our clients where they will utilize video chat methods to demonstrate the vehicle of choice to our prospective clients. During a virtual test drive a sales team member will show the interior and exterior of the vehicle and they will demonstrate functionality of the vehicle as desired by the client. We encourage customers to utilize our virtual showroom at gilbertbaughford.com to find and narrow their vehicle interests down to a specific unit. We have implemented tools to assist customers in working their entire deal online which includes getting bank approval, choosing extended warranties, GAP insurances, and other vehicle care products. If a customer utilizes our online deal structuring methods, once they have selected their vehicle of choice, we will arrange for vehicle delivery of a sanitized vehicle to a place of the client’s choosing where they can inspect the vehicle, do a final test drive if necessary, and complete the remaining paperwork with the delivery driver. Our sales team has been trained to assist customers as they are working through their deal online and are readied to answer any questions a prospective client has remotely. Our dealership offers a chat service on our website where shoppers can get some questions answered by our chat attendants. Our sales staff oversees the chat attendants and if available can take over the chat to assist if they are not tied up with another client at that time. If they are unavailable, we encourage each customer to give the chat attendant their contact information and a member of our staff will be in contact as soon as the business allows for them to do so. Our Finance Department is working closely with our banks to ensure that we are taking full advantage of the lowered interest rates issued by the Federal Reserve. Our Finance Department has negotiated terms with one or more of our banks to offer clients with approved credit the option to delay their first payment for 90 days. Test Cities Test cities for automated vehicles... coming to a town near you? AUTOS REVOLUTION “IT SEEMS AN AUTOS REVOLUTION IS UPON US.” —Consumer Reports April 2017 From Arizona to Massachusetts, the move toward fully automated vehicles is picking up speed. Since 2012, no fewer than 41 states and the District of Columbia have considered laws pertaining to fully automated vehicles on roadways. At least 13 states have ratified some sort of legislation: Alabama, Arkansas, California, Florida, Louisiana, Michigan, New York, Nevada, North Dakota, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Utah and Virginia —and Washington D.C. Governors in Massachusetts and Arizona have issued executive orders encouraging testing on their roads with extensive programs already underway. Why are states so interested? Are fully automated vehicles going viral? Politicians, researchers and business leaders hope to earn the mantle of “early adopter” attracting research and investment to their region. It could put them on the map. Another major motivator is reducing crashes and traffic deaths: 94 percent of traffic crashes are the result of human error. Computer controlled cars using Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) could greatly reduce crashes. ADAS is the suite of technologies that are today’s stepping stones to automated vehicles. When cutting-edge vehicles or new transportation models (e.g. rideshare, car share, etc) roll into town, governments want to make sure their cities are safe for traditional and automated vehicles alike. Silicon Valley of Firsts If any place could be crowned the birthplace of “automated vehicles,” it would be Silicon Valley in California. Home to Apple, Google’s Waymo (now Alphabet), Intel, NVIDIA and Tesla, just to name a few, this high-tech, venture capital hub is 45 miles south of the San Francisco Bay Area. California has had some of the first legislation for testing automated vehicles with safety drivers behind the wheel. It is not uncommon to see cars throughout California adorned with cameras and radar devices roaming the streets. California has legislated that these test miles must be conducted with an approved safety pilot behind the traditional “driver’s wheel” of the vehicle. You can find more information about California’s legislation here: www.dmv.ca.gov/portal/dmv/detail/vr/autonomous/auto Rust Belt Getting New Luster In 2015, Uber ventured out of its Silicon Valley comfort zone, landing in Pittsburgh to set up the Advanced Technologies Center at Carnegie Mellon University. Pittsburgh offered an environment that the Bay Area could not: snowy weather. PennDOT, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation, has been given broad authority to administer the Automated Vehicle Testing Policy. PennDOT requires the proper onboard technology and a driver must be sitting behind the wheel, ready to intervene if necessary. Of course, the driver still must perform the human-to-human, ride-sharing customer interface function. Detroit, with its long automotive history, also is leading major efforts in automated vehicle research and development. According to Wired Magazine (April 2017), Ford and GM operations in Michigan have made major advancements – giving Silicon Valley companies a run for their money. 10 Cities Designated as Official Test Cities In January 2017, the U.S. Department of Transportation designated 10 proving ground pilot sites for the testing of automated vehicles. The 10 out of 60 applicants were selected for their unique attributes, preparedness for higher levels of testing and previous infrastructure. Former U.S. DOT Secretary Anthony Foxx says this designation will encourage cities to openly share best practices while accelerating the pace of safe deployment. One such test site is the Iowa City-Cedar Rapids corridor. Home to The University of Iowa, this area is known for its state-of-the-art vehicle safety research, including the world renowned National Advanced Driving Simulator. The state is in the process of creating high-definition road maps that will guide automated vehicles and possibly attract other researchers to the area. That is, I think, a very long-range future,” says Dan McGehee, director of the National Advanced Driving Simulator at the University of Iowa. Arizona Rolls Out the Red Carpet In 2015, Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey created the Arizona Self-Driving Vehicle Oversight Committee. The Phoenix area is buzzing with automated vehicle pilot projects. Google cars are plying the streets of Chandler and Ahwatukee testing how automated vehicles perform in punishing sun, heat and dust storms. The University of Arizona in Tucson is partnering with Uber while the people-mover company Local Motors is testing an automated shuttle bus named Olli. MASSACHUSETTS COMMITS BRAIN POWER Massachusetts Gov. Charlie Baker’s Executive Order 572 in October 2016 established the AV Working Group to formulate a policy for testing automated vehicles in Massachusetts. The Memorandum of Understanding requires that automated vehicles be “operated without undue risk to public safety, and at all times will have a human being inside the vehicle while it is traveling.” While automated vehicles are not yet cruising Massachusetts, the state’s deep bench in research and academia has attracted billions of dollars for development. MIT, Olin College and UMass Amherst are in the forefront of the tech boom. NextDroid Labs, nuTonomy, Autoliv Electronics and Amazon Robotics are high-flying local tech companies racing to create intelligent, decision-making systems for automated vehicles. A five-year, $1 billion grant from Toyota is being split between Palo Alto, CA, and Cambridge, MA. Some researchers and car makers feel the next big hurdle is to create 3D maps of all the nation’s roads. Maybe you can help? Some hope to gather the mapping data through crowd sourcing by using data taken from onboard cameras already installed. Consumer Reports asserts that “some of the gnarliest issues still must be solved,” such as perfecting sensors that can see in all conditions, and that liability and ethical questions are in the early stages of discussion. Obstacles and opportunities on the road ahead Self-Driving Cars and the Future of Transportation ENGINEERING ISSUES First came the concept: A vehicle that could drive itself without any human interaction. Then came the legwork: How would it function? Where would designers place its cameras and sensors? Who would write the code enabling these vehicles to make split-second decisions to avoid a crash? Many miles lie ahead on the road toward mainstream use of fully automated vehicles. The technology could save tens of thousands of lives every year, but it remains years (if not decades) from becoming a reality on the majority of streets and interstates in America. Innovation takes time to fine-tune, and it is reasonable to expect more adjustments along the way as miles driven lead to lessons learned. In the meantime, several engineering issues must be addressed before fully automated vehicles replace driver-operated vehicles as the most common form of transportation. “Seniors can keep their freedom even if they can’t keep their car keys. And drunk and distracted driving? History.” -TIME.COM Sensors Cameras and sensors are the eyes and ears in allowing fully automated vehicles to drive safely and effectively. Miniaturization, cost and accuracy are still being worked on. And what happens if snow, ice or mud blocks the sensors? Or if snow covers the lines of the road, which then could block the vehicle from identifying an upcoming curve or lanes merging or anything else? Drivers know all too well the hazards of driving in snow and ice. Vehicle safety technology might change, but severe weather will remain, and one unresolved issue is how fully automated vehicles will operate safely when roads are snow-covered and visibility is at a premium. Likewise, redundancies will be necessary in case vandals damage or remove high-tech cameras and sensors belonging to new vehicles. Infrastructure Poorly maintained roads, signs and lane markings, as well as construction zones, offer additional challenges for engineers to overcome before a high-level rollout of fully automated vehicles. A driver behind a steering wheel can identify orange cones and realize a lane is blocked off a half-mile in front of him or her. Sometimes, vehicles must veer on to the shoulder as they slowly pass by a construction zone. How can experts ensure that fully automated vehicles will be able to process the same type of information in the same way – or better? Poor road maintenance opens the door to other potential complications with fully automated vehicles. Will these vehicles be able to safely avoid big potholes? What if signs, marking and striping are faded or missing entirely? The smooth pavement of testing tracks is far different than many deteriorating roads. Urban environments The first wave of fully automated vehicles is expected to be deployed in dense, urban environments such as San Francisco, New York City and Washington, D.C. Each city features high levels of traffic congestion, not to mention plenty of pedestrians and bicyclists. The driving experience can be very unpredictable. In addition to unanticipated events, the sheer quantity of vehicles, pedestrians and objects increases the chances that a problem might arise. Traditional drivers and people on the street could lack the training and experience to know how a fully automated vehicle will behave and why. Connectivity Fully automated vehicles may have the capability to communicate with other vehicles (commonly known as vehicle-to-vehicle, or “V2V” technology), infrastructure (“V2I”) and everything else in its path (“V2X”). But this communication system remains a work in progress during the testing stage of these vehicles. Driver-operator vehicles currently are not equipped to communicate with fully automated vehicles. The new vehicles also could struggle to establish communication points with infrastructure, which lags behind in many areas and might prove to be particularly challenging in rural communities. The larger-scale V2X technology faces similar complications because not all systems will be equipped to receive and return information that is disseminated by vehicles. NEW TECHNOLOGY IS INEVITABLE The Federal Automated Vehicles Policy asserts that “the rise of new technology is inevitable” and emphasizes the importance of proper planning and follow-through to promote safety. Manufacturers and other stakeholders should follow a systems-engineering approach to help them design highly automated vehicle technology “free of unreasonable safety risks,” the document’s authors state. That means engineers must develop functions so that highly automated vehicles remain in a safe state in the event of electrical, electronic or mechanical malfunctions or software errors. Cybersecurity threats and vulnerabilities also must be considered during the design process. Meanwhile, as manufacturers race to develop and distribute highly automated vehicles, agencies such as the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration will benefit from hiring experts in science, engineering and mathematics to conduct pre-market testing on new technologies. The policy says engineering and design safety considerations should include, but not be limited to, the following possibilities: Actuator, sensor and communication failure Software errors Inadequate control and undesirable control actions Collisions with environmental objects and occupants on the road Collisions that could be caused by the vehicle system Leaving the roadway Loss of traction or stability Violations of traffic laws and or variance from expected driving methods Software and hardware updates initiated by manufacturers could fall under government purview depending on the complexity of the updates, the document states. NHTSA would evaluate each highly automated vehicle system based on a 15-point “Safety Assessment” that covers areas such as data recording and sharing; privacy; system safety; human machine interface; post-crash behavior; object and event detection and response; and crashworthiness. Engineers already have had a tremendous effect on vehicle safety technology, DOT says. “New vehicle technologies developed in the 20th century – from seat belts to air bags to child seats – were once controversial,” the federal policy document states. “But after having saved hundreds of thousands of American lives, they are now considered indispensable. Advanced technologies developed in the first part of the 21st century – like automatic emergency braking and lane departure warnings – are already making U.S. roads safer. FROM PACKAGE DELIVERIES TO MOBILE CAR WASHES,  FORD BRINGS NEW SERVICES TO YOUR CONNECTED CAR

Ford is teaming up with Amazon to bring its Key by Amazon In-Car delivery service to eligible Ford and Lincoln vehicles. For more than a century, Ford has powered people’s ability to get where they need to go with safe, reliable cars. Now, we think it’s time to flip the script. Instead of using our vehicles solely to get us to our destinations, what if we used them as beacons to bring convenient and secure services to us? Thanks to advancements in wireless technology, we now are easily connected to the goods and services we want. With the internet, we’ve been able to save time by shopping online instead of leaving the house for everything from food and clothing, to electronics and more. And the results have been undeniable. Last year alone, the United States Postal Service delivered close to 6.2 billion packages — double the amount it delivered almost a decade ago. Some of these packages fit snugly into our mailboxes or can be accepted by building staff, but a lot of them end up sitting outside on porches and front stoops — vulnerable to bad weather or going missing. So, it’s easy to get anxious about your deliveries when you aren’t home to receive them. That’s why we’re teaming up with Amazon to bring its Key by Amazon In-Car delivery service to eligible Ford and Lincoln vehicles. Through In-Car delivery, eligible Ford and Lincoln owners now can have their Amazon Prime packages delivered to their vehicles. It’s a convenient, secure way to ensure your packages are delivered directly to you when you are out for the day, anticipating bad weather or wondering if your package is safe. Key by Amazon in-car delivery is available for select Ford 2017 and later model year vehicles equipped with FordPass Connect, and for Lincoln 2018 and later model year vehicles equipped with Lincoln Connect. In-Car delivery will be available virtually anywhere that Amazon offers the service, which is currently in several U.S. cities and surrounding areas. To use the in-car service you need to download the FordPass or Lincoln Way app, create an account, and activate your car for in-car delivery. Amazon Key app enables in-car deliveries by linking your Amazon Prime account with your FordPass or Lincoln Way account. You’ll receive notifications throughout the delivery process, including a head’s up right before delivery takes place and a confirmation that delivery is complete and your car has been securely locked. And for added peace of mind, the delivery driver verifies that your vehicle has been successfully relocked before proceeding with the next delivery. Plus, you are always in control, so if you change your mind the day of delivery, you can block access to your car; delivery will be made to the building where your car is parked or you can reschedule the delivery to the following day. And while this service alone is pretty exciting, Key In-Car delivery is just the first wave of what’s possible. Through our Ford connected vehicle services, other businesses are able to integrate their apps with Ford and Lincoln connected vehicles. This will allow us to deliver additional new services to our customers’ vehicles that improve their daily lives. For example, in addition to Key by Amazon, we’re also working with several different on-demand car wash services through FordPass and Lincoln Way, to give people the option to purchase eco-friendly car washes from Spiffy, RUB A DUB and Sparkl wherever these services are available. Ford is also working with several on-demand car wash services like Spiffy. Just think — instead of driving to a car wash and waiting in line, these companies can come straight to your car with a number of different services, including water-saving car washes and detailing service. And with the new functionality, they can unlock and lock your vehicle to clean the interior too, even removing pet hair that’s dug its way into your seats and floors. Spiffy is finalizing the launch of their Ford and Lincoln connected vehicle services for on-demand car washing in Atlanta, Charlotte, Dallas, Los Angeles, and Raleigh. Sparkl recently launched their on-demand car washing experience in the Chicago metro area, and Rub A Dub will launch later this year. Deliveries. Car washes. You can imagine the many on-demand services that are coming to your Ford and Lincoln vehicle. After all, people everywhere are actively looking for ways to simplify their lives. The on-demand economy is attracting more than 22.4 million consumers annually and $57.6 billion in spending, according to the Harvard Business Review, and that is only expected to grow.
